Our Story
The I Can. I Am. Foundation was founded by Stacie Harris. Its mission is to support single moms who want to further their education, make a difference in their community, by being an example to rise up in hard times.
The story began when Stacie anxiously waited for the newborn specialist to arrive. Her husband entered the hospital room and asked for a divorce. Needless to say, he did not bring her flowers.
Reality check! Alone with a newborn with complications, and a one and two-year-old; her fairytale of happily-ever-after was shattered! It was the beginning of her road as a single mom.
Stacie spent the next year cleaning homes, because she knew she could clean a toilet. It was a short time later, when her ecclesiastical leader suggested she attend college. “Who, me? No way! I barely made it out of high school,” she said.
When Stacie showed up at the university, her entrance exams scored at a fourth grade level. She wasn’t qualified to go to college. She spent a few months at the local community technology college to raise her grade level. Stacie started school with a two, three, and four-year-old by her side.
Fast forward to Weber State University, May 3, 2003. Stacie recalls as it being one of those moments when words cannot describe. “It felt surreal. What I regret, I did not saunter or stroll. I walked too fast across the stage to receive my hard and well-earned diploma.”
The I Can. I Am. Foundation provides scholarships to single mothers. The awards range from $500-$1,500 annually, and can be used at any university, college, or technical school. (Scholarship funds are awarded directly to the school into student’s accounts.)
